The Old and the New

I feel like I go through eating phases, alternating between periods of novelty and downright ruts. I’ll have weeks where every dinner is a new recipe, every snack some clever concoction. And then suddenly I’ll grow tired of the effort and start eating the same thing day in and day out.

Lately, however, I’ve had more success with striking a balance, with enjoying old favorites while also sprinkling in some newbies. Here is the visual proof. ;-)

The New

Broccoli topped with Heather’s Marinutta Sauce (pasta sauce mixed with peanut butter and ground flax).

After this and the nut butter crusted parsnip fries, I’m starting to think there is nothing that doesn’t go with peanut/almond butter!

KABOCHA SQUASH!!! I’ve loved butternut, buttercup, and acorn squash for quite some time, but had never tried the elusive kachocha…until now!

Sliced and roasted with some agave nectar, it did not disappoint! ;-)

Fruition ProBar in Cran-Raspberry. This was yummy!  The texture/consistency was similar to that of a LARABAR, except with more ingredients and fewer calories. I’d purchase again!

And a new (to me) cereal!

I purchased a few new cereals in the hopes of finding one that is simultaneously tasty, filling, and as natural as possible. I’d say that Kashi Autumn Wheat pretty much fits the bill. The ingredients are just wholegrain wheat, evaporated cane juice, and natural flavors, and there are only 7 grams of sugar per serving (which is actually quite low for a cold cereal!).

I ate it from a pretty bowl with banana, strawberries, and almond milk.

The Old

After a brief hiatus, I’ve brought cottage cheese back into my life.

Plopped atop strawberries and mango chunks.

I’ve also reunited with the beloved Breakfast Cookie!

In the evening I mixed together 1/3 cup oats, 1/2 mashed banana, 1 tbsp almond butter, a small splash of almond milk, lots of cinnamon, and a couple of dried cherries. Spread it out on the plate, popped it in the fridge, and ate it up the next morning!

Next time I’ll chop up the dried cherries…they’re so good but so darn big! 8-O

Classic snack: dried fruit (cherries again) with roasted almonds.

And a tried-and-true dessert: a chocolate VitaTop with a splash of milk and banana slices. SOOOOOO GOOD!

And finally, a lovely combination of old and new: the kitties in their NEW cat beds! :-D

Are you wearing RED today???

Today is National Wear Red Day, part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign to fight heart disease in women. I was sure to don the color on my trip to the gym this morning.

Here’s the run-through of everything my tummy enjoyed on Thursday!


Yesterday, you will see, was all about COOKIES!

I enjoyed my version of a breakfast “cookie,” an idea made famous in the blog world by The Fitnessista. Gina offers a great explanation for how to make said breakfast cookies here. It’s very simple, and you can make all different combinations. For this one, I combined these elements on Wednesday night:

  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1 heaping tablespoon creamy almond butter
  • tiny splash of milk
  • 1/2 banana, mashed
  • 2 tablespoons golden raisins
  • lots of cinnamon

I put the whole mixture on a plate and flattened it out with the back of a spoon until it was evenly thick throughout. Then I just put it in the fridge overnight.

By the morning, the cookie had hardened from the nut butter, but the oats had softened from the milk.

So good and so filling! But if you try it, don’t expect it to taste exactly like a cookie (I think the name comes more from the appearance than the taste). Honestly, it tastes exactly like you would expect the combination of ingredients to taste like. In the past I’ve made other mixtures using chocolate chips, other kinds of dried fruit, and canned pumpkin!

I eat mine with a spoon, but I’ve heard of some people spraying the plate with non-stick spray and then taking their cookie to-go!

Enjoyed with some green grapes.

A very satisfying way to start the day! :-D

Mid-Morning Snack

After breakfast I headed out into the windy cold for a 40-minute run. It was…interesting.

I went to a highly popular running/biking loop, so I was not surprised to be surrounded by many other exercise enthusiasts. However, for a good 10 minutes, this guy ran between 5 and 10 feet directly behind me. I HATED it! I felt like I was being chased or something. Of course, I’m fully aware that I could easily have slowed down and let him pass me, but I was really happy with the steady pace I was keeping. Besides, I felt like he should be the one to pass me, since – judging by appearances – he seemed to be the faster, more experienced runner (and by that I mean he was wearing fancy-schmancy running tights, while I was wearing a baggy, matching jump suit – seriously! ).

And not only was this guy running directly behind me, but he also kept spitting…a lot. I understand that we runners need to hack it up every now and then; I’ve got no problem with that. But it’s hard to concentrate on running when all you can think about are the noises coming from immediately behind you – the plodding of feet, the hacking of saliva…I couldn’t stop thinking, why don’t you just go ahead and pass me, buddy??? Has something like this ever happened to you?

When I got home from my run/feeling-like-I was-being-chased experience, I warmed up and re-fueled with a mug of hot tea and the rest of my banana (leftover from making the breakfast cookie).


When lunch time rolled around, all I was craving was a grilled cheese sandwich. I wanted one so badly. So you can imagine my disappointment when I discovered the only cheese I had in the house was covered in MOLD! 

After I mourned my cheese, I made a grilled panini.

The panini consisted of:

It made a decent substitute, but I am definitely putting grilled cheese sandwiches on my menu as soon as I’m able to re-stock my cheese supply!

On the side, a serving of Stacy’s Simply Naked pita chips. I’m actually not a huge chip person, but I just love these! I’ve only ever had the original kind, but I’m excited to try some other flavors! Suggestions? I’m intrigued by the Cinnamon Sugar.

I thought this would be enough food, but after I finished it I realized I wasn’t quite full enough. So I went back to the kitchen and grabbed a Jazz apple. (Of course I sliced it up after I took this photo. ;-) )

Afternoon Snack

Pretty standard – plain Greek yogurt.

Sweetened up with some pear chunks and a drizzle of agave nectar.

Plus the rest of the pear on the side (it was MASSIVE!)

A very filling snack indeed! :-)


Between my snack and dinner I experienced a wonderful victory in my life – I successfully inserted my new contact lenses! I’ve never worn contacts before, and just got them at the eye doctor on Wednesday. I thought putting them in and taking them out would be a breeze, but such was not the case.  :-? I actually tried putting them in earlier in the day, and struggled so much and got so frustrated that I gave up! But later in the day I tried again and was successful! I guess I just have to get used to getting so up close and personal with my pupils. ;-)

Dinner was leftover Bison Rotini!!!

For such a simple recipe, this stuff is really good!

Steamed broccoli on the side.

Evening Snack

After dinner I magically morphed into this:


Honestly, the past few evenings all I’ve wanted for dessert has been COOKIES!

This week I had to make a run to the larger grocery store to pick up some items I can’t get at Trader Joe’s, and somehow I came home with these:

Do you ever just crave a totally unhealthy cookie? I was, and I figured these would do the trick, considering the package even says “indulgent”!  :-)

I had two.

Warmed in the microwave for a few seconds so they’d be gooey and soft.

A couple questions for ya:

Are you wearing RED today? If not, go change! :lol:

Do you prefer your cookies soft and chewy or hard and crunchy? I am definitely a soft-cookie kind of gal; crunchy cookies do absolutely nothing for me.
