About Me

I’m Katie, and I’m so happy you’ve stopped by my little piece of Internet. I’m a part-time blogger and full-time nine-to-fiver whose passions include writing, learning to love my body just as it is, and pizza. Sometimes I’m silly, sometimes I’m serious; I tell cheesy jokes one day and contemplate the meaning of life the next, and document the full range of it here on this blog.

Years ago I thought that being healthy meant foregoing that piece of chocolate cake and sweating over the treadmill as much as possible, which was exactly what I did. I read nutrition labels until I went cross-eyed and ran until my legs buckled. Not surprisingly, all of that dieting deprivation and excessive exercise led to many a secret ice cream binge in front of the television. My life became defined by its cycles of dieting and bingeing, of being “good” by sticking to my diet and being “bad” by overeating emotionally. Reaching my goal weight was a dream I was always either pursuing tirelessly or denying fiercely.

Eventually I realized that I was just spinning my wheels. I became conscious of the fact that my obsessive dieting and my compulsive overeating were both ways of distracting myself from uncomfortable emotions, avoiding my true feelings, and numbing the inevitable pain and discomfort of life. So I said “no more!” and vowed to embrace all that life has to offer – the good and the bad, the ups and the downs – without relying on food or dieting.

These days I try not to judge myself by the number on the scale or the size of my jeans. I remind myself that exercise isn’t about punishment, and I take pleasure in eating everything from cookies to cauliflower. I’m striving to heal my relationship with food and with my body in a way that is truly healthy, and I hope you’ll join me!

When I’m not in front of my MacBook blogging about body image or last night’s dinner, you can find me curled up with a novel, hiking through the woods, or just relaxing with my Hubs and our two kitties in our beloved hometown of Baltimore.

About Health for the Whole Self

As the title of my blog implies, I believe that healthy living involves taking care of our entire selves – our bodies, our minds, and our spirits. Too often we hear the word “health” and think only of food and exercise. While it’s certainly important to nourish our physical bodies, living a truly healthy lifestyle involves so much more!

That’s why you’ll find that almost no subject is off-limits here on Health for the Whole Self. One day I might write about a new exercise routine I’m trying, while the next day I post about the importance of cultivating gratitude in our lives. One day I’ll share a recipe for an easy peasy dinner idea, and the next day I’ll post about my struggles with disordered eating. And the next day I’ll put up some cute pictures of my cats!

Of course, some subjects do come up more than others, like Body Image and Intuitive Eating. You can click on the links across the top of the site to see all of my posts related to those topics and more.

What makes blogging so cool is the way it opens the door between the writer and the reader. I’m not here to share expert advice or to tell you what to do; I’m here to share my journey and connect with you on yours. So don’t be shy!     Sounds like you would be a great health counselor, if you want to teach people “health for the whole self”.

But I always went up there to visit and hang out some good friends. I live in bmore too. I would love meet up sometime to go out eat around here.     I am so thrilled to have found your blog!! What a great inspiration. I have been a Christian since I was a small child, but finally came to the realization a couple days ago that I can’t fix my eating problem without fully relying on Jesus. I thought I had given it over to Him, but for me giving it over then punishing my body with excess exercise, deprivation type dieting, and living on my bathroom scale is not God’s will for my life.

    Anyhow…sorry to ramble on and on…I look forward to following your blog :)

      Hi, Lisa! I’m so glad you found my blog! I think you’re absolutely right that to truly get past our eating issues, we need to forgo our own strength (or lack thereof) and rely on God. But as you pointed out, it’s easier said than done. Keep fighting the good fight!

    I can’t believe you graduated from LVC!! I graduated from E-town many years ago and live in York. I lived in Baltimore (Mt. Washington) for two years. My boyfriend is an LVC grad and worked at the college for a few years. He left in 2007, I believe, to work at another college. Small world!

    I really enjoy reading your blog and can’t wait to try some of your recipes, especially the breakfast one made in the microwave.

      Hi, Lena! What a small world! Considering how small LVC is, I bet there’s a good chance I knew your boyfriend (or at least knew who he was). What department did he work in? And how crazy is it that you used to live in Baltimore and now live in York, while I’m the exact flip of that! I grew up in the Leader Heights area and went to Dallastown HS.

        He worked in athletics as the sports information director. I actually grew up in York (east York; not far from Galleria Mall) and moved to Baltimore to teach. My sister-in-law is a Dallastown grad too!! Do you still have family in the area?

        I’ve been eating the microwave “sausage”/eggs recipe for the past two mornings. It’s so yummy…and so easy! I use the maple flavored patties for the sweetness factor.

            I just came across your blog when I looked up Baltimore on the Healthy Living Blog site. I have been reading HL blogs for months now and just recently (a few days ago) decided to start my own. Our headers are almost exactly alike (I promise I didn’t copy!). I graduated from Towson in 2005 with a degree in Psychology and Sport Studies and just recently started taking prerequisites for a program in Dietetics. My father lives in York and I’m actually going to visit tomorrow. What a small small world. I love your health philosophy and it was spooky how very similar it is to mine.       You’re right; as my disclaimer states, I am not an expert on nutrition or fitness. Any time that I discuss a health or fitness related topic on the blog, I include a link to the original source where I found my information. This enables my readers to see my sources firsthand, and allows them to judge the credibility of those sources for themselves.

    Hi Katie-I am so glad that I found your blog. Your story is something that I have really struggled with. It was until recently that I “woke up” and realized that the extreme lifestyle I was living (in terms of having that “all or nothing mentality” with my diet and exercise) was not working. I am about 15-20 pounds over a weight that I am comfortable with out of anger and frustration. I just gave up and ate whatever I wanted, because I found that far more easier than to obsessively count calories all the time, not realizing that I didn’t even have to do that. I am striving towards finding balance and hearing your story and seeing how you overcame your own struggles is giving me the hope that I can overcome my eating disorder. Thank you so much for sharing and I look foward to continually reading! =)
