Cheddar Garlic Bread

Long story short: I’m a bread woman.

Bakeries make me swoon. Open-faced sandwiches feel…incomplete. I can easily make a meal out of bread and cheese alone.

So why not just bake them into one? ;-)

Unfortunately, for as much as I love bread, I rarely make it myself. Not because I don’t want to, but because it seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to. So Dave and I usually just pick up a bag of dinner rolls or a baguette at the local bakery and have that with dinner, which is certainly delicious, but can get old night after night, week after week.

All of that is to say, the day I stumbled across this recipe for Cheddar Garlic Bread was a good one. I was already craving warm, homemade bread (a common occurrence). AND I actually had the time to make it (a rare occurrence). AND I already had all of the ingredients on hand.  TRIFECTA! 8-)

The best part is that the actual effort I had to put in was pretty darn minimal. I think I spent 10 minutes – 15 max – putting it together. Sure, then it had to bake for an hour, but that gave me plenty of time to leisurely put together the rest of the meal.

Not too shabby, if I do say so myself! :-)

from Stephanie Cooks

4.5 tsp baking powder
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp Italian seasonings, divided
1.5 cups milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 egg

1. Preheat oven to 350º.

2. Combine the flour, baking powder, cheese, sugar, garlic powder, and 1/4 tsp of the Italian seasonings in a medium bowl.

3. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, oil, and egg. Stir into the dry ingredients until moistened.

4. Pour into a greased 9×5 loaf pan. Scatter the remaining 1/4 tsp Italian seasonings across the top.

5. Bake for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing and slicing.

This looks fantastic. Making an entire loaf of bread does frighten me unless it come from a box where all I do is add one ingredient. But this does seem simple enough and no yeast so I think I’d be okay.

  2. This sounds like an amazing bread. I’ve never made my own bread! It’s high time!

  3. Yup, I’m down for a whole meal of bread and cheese. That may or may not happen more frequently than I’d like to admit ;) You’re totally right about all those ingredients being nice and simple…I actually have all of them on hand too! I do believe there will be some baking going down in this kitch this evening…

  4. Wow looks and sounds incredible, wonder how easy this would be to make GF. I haven’t ventured into real bread making since being GF — just seems a little scary! I have made some breads that could go in muffins too :P

  5. I love quick bread recipes! So simple to make, none of the rising and kneading. Plus, I looove the cheddar garlic biscuits a lot of restaurants serve.

  6. I don’t ever make bread myself…besides like corn muffins or something. I’m not the hugest bread fan though.

  7. ya know what’s funny? My husband asked me to learn to make garlic bread (like the one we get from the bakery). I am bookmarking this for the weekend! Thanks!

  8. Yum! I love bread. I’m like you though, I never have the time to make it. Maybe this weekend I’ll make time.

*bookmarks recipe* This is just begging to be served with a heaping bowl of pasta e fagioli! Yum! Thanks for sharing!

I have a pumpkin bread recipe “handed down” from my MIL, though I’ve since tweaked it a bit, and I make it regularly through the fall and winter. Lately I’ve been doing more muffins, now that I have a go-to muffin recipe—I can tweak the base recipe and make banana, blueberry, pumpkin, cranberry, or apple spice muffins.

I also have a bread machine, and I use that mostly for my husband’s sandwich bread. I have to confess, I don’t eat a lot of sandwich bread myself. I’m not a low-carber per se, but bread is so calorie-dense that by the time I’ve made a sandwich with two slices of regular bread, I can’t “afford” to have anything on the side. So I use a sandwich thin, light English muffin, or low-carb tortilla, and I have enough calories leftover for some vegetable soup or carrots with hummus.

  10. i wish i had a video of my face when i read the title…this is everything i love in the world! i’m totally making this for nate tonight and will undoubtedly be showered with kisses :)

    All that gluteny goodness.

I’m a total bread fiend! I’ve been looking into a weight loss regime that had such a good system, except for that bread was so limited.

I’ve never made bread, because the yeast thing freaks me out, but this sounds like a great recipe.

I will be trying this recipe asap!!!

  16. I’m a bread and cheese-aholic. Put them together and you have my idea of Heaven. Yum.

Sounds amazing – I must try it this weekend! I actually love complicated, time-consuming baking and really enjoy throwing together a homemade loaf (or two) on the weekends. I usually combine all the ingredients when I first wake up, then let it rise while I do my cleaning, bill paying, and have a nice breakfast with my husband. (gosh, I sound domestic!) Seriously, I’ve found that a lot of bread recipes are pretty forgiving and they’re so much tastier than the store bought varieties. Plus you can add your own flair – I like to make whole wheat bread with ground flax, oats, and sunflower seeds.

  18. I am a total bread lover too! Homemade bread is the best.

When I worked at a bakery about 3 years ago I was in bread heaven. It was seriously the best bread I’ve ever had on almost a daily basis.

  19. Maureen says:

Sounds wonderful!Bread is one of the major food groups as far as I’m concerned. Our whole family loves bread and I baked my first loaf at age 12. It’s relaxing to make and much more satisfying than store-bought (although I’ll eat that, too!). I’m going to try this recipe alongside a big pot of vegetable soup when it snows this weekend. My idea of heaven is a cold winter’s day with bread baking in the oven.
