Baked Crab and Cream Cheese Wontons

By Katie, July 8, 2010 6:16 am

It went a little something like this:

Dave: Wow, these are really good!
Katie: Yeah, like really good!
Dave: Yeah, like really, really good!
Katie: Yeah, like really, really, REALLY good!

Etc., Etc. ;-)

I believe somewhere in there I also said, “You know, we have the blog to thank for this.”

You see, back when I posted this ridiculously-delicious recipe for Sweet and Sour Chicken, I asked all of you lovely readers to share your favorite Chinese-inspired dish. One reader named Jen –  to whom I am now forever indebted – shared that she loves making cream cheese wontons. I immediately asked for more information, and she kindly obliged. I tweaked her response just a tad, and these Baked Crab and Cream Cheese Wontons were born! :-)

First I made the filling: a simple mixture of canned crab meat, cream cheese, black pepper, garlic powder, and fresh chives.

Then I broke out these puppies. 8-)

I dolloped a heaping teaspoon of the crab-cream cheese mixture onto the middle of each wonton wrapper, then wet the edges and folded it into a hat-like shape, according to the package directions.

(My apologies for the yellow-tinted photos – my kitchen lighting is dismal in the evenings.)

All lined up!

I baked them at 400º for 7 minutes or so, just until the tops were a bit browned. They had the slightest crunch on the outside, but were warm and soft on the inside – perfect! And the tops were like little handles, meaning these would make awesome party appetizers!

I also think they’d be great with shrimp or smoked salmon, if crab isn’t really your thing (in other words, if you’re crazy! ;-) )

Served with a heaping portion of steamed veggies, topped with some of the five-spice powder from my Five-Spice Turkey and Lettuce Wraps.

A great meal that must be duplicated soon! THANK YOU, READER JEN, WHEREVER YOU ARE! :-D

Baked Crab and Cream Cheese Wontons
Adapted from Reader Jen
Makes about 20 wontons

Ingredients
Wonton wrappers (about 4×4” in size)
4 tbsp cream cheese, softened
6 oz. can of crab meat (4 oz. drained)
freshly ground pepper (to taste)
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 cup fresh chives, finely chopped

1. In a small bowl, mix together the crab, cream cheese, pepper, garlic powder, and chives.

2. Dollop a heaping teaspoonful onto the center of each wonton wrapper, then wet the edges and fold into a “hat” shape (per the directions on the wonton wrapper package).

3. Place the wontons on a baking sheet lined with foil or sprayed with nonstick spray. Spray the wontons liberally with more spray (I used Olive Oil spray).

4. Bake at 400º for about 7 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Have you ever made wontons before?

If you write a blog, have you ever made a recipe from a reader?

I love crab wontons and these look delicious! I am definitely going to make these.

I haven’t made wontons before, but I use the shells to make cups to hold a cold crab salad. To make the shells, I just put a wonton wrapper in a cupcake tin and bake at 350 for about 8 minutes or until it’s hard. Then you can fill it with whatever filling you want.

  2. Simply Life says:

    Oh wow, these look AMAZING!!!

  3. Lauren says:

Oh wow, I remember being able to eat an entire plate of these things at the Chinese restaurant! Yours definitely look so much healthier but just as good! ;)

  4. Ok now being vegan, they shouldn’t sound good…but OH MY they SO do!! I love the chives/garlic/creamy combination – it sounds wonderful! It’s a shame I have no idea how to make Chinese food :s

  5. Jessica says:

I’ve not made wontons, but I’ve made gyoza’s and spring rolls. These look and sound fab.

  6. OMG, OMG, OMG!! Best recipe I’ve seen on a blog in WEEKS. Ahhhhhhh! I can just feel me eating these during football season when I don’t move from the couch all day except to grab these from the oven! Haha..totally NOT kidding, either!

  7. Shawnee says:

Oh my goodness. This sounds absolutely amazing. I may have to try these.

  10. Looks fabulous! I have made lots of recipes from readers…it is so fun! I get some of the best recipes from blogs!

  11. These look so good! Crab is one of my very favorite things! I’ve used wonton wrappers before, but the filling I used was more of a spring roll filling. I think it was a mixture of finely chopped sprouts, water chestnuts, mushrooms, broccoli and chicken.

I don’t think I’ve used a reader recipe as it was written yet, but I sure have been inspired by many!

  12. Those look fabulous!!!!! I love love crab and cream cheese and putting them together sound fabulous! I’ve never cooked anything with a wonton and now I’m wondering if there is a gluten free wonton out there… the search begins!

  13. Mmmm I have made potstickers before but never wontons. These sounds sooo delicious! I’m defintely making them at some point! That’s the reason why I love blogging and blog reading so much because you get exposed to so many things you would NEVER know about otherwise!

  14. Ooooh my. Katie, you may have created a monster. LOL
At a chinese food restaurant — the stuffed wontons (rangoons) are my FAVORITE. And they’re always fried and greasy.
It looks like you may have just given me a baked solution!

    THANK YOU! LOL

  15. Josie says:

ahh, my favorite appetizer! sometimes i think the fried-ness of the restaurant kind is distracting. i can’t wait to try these puppies!

  16. Mo says:

That sounds so weird but so delicious at the same time…

  17. Oh my goll, those look good! I have made what I call “Athena Dumplings” that were sort of like hummus-filled bites of delicious. :)

  18. These look fantastic! I’ve never tried making wontons, but love ordering them at restaurants. Crab and cream cheese is one of my favorite combinations!

  19. Jen says:

I have always been afraid to try wonton wrappers. Are they easy to use??? I am definitely going to have to try these. I think I’ll make crab for the hubbers and try some cubed tofu in mine. Delish!!!

  20. Becca says:

Yum! These look delish! My sister and I made wontons from the Wagamama recipe book for my Mum’s surprise 45th birthday party. We minced prawns with spring onion, garlic and ginger, and put them in wonton wrappers before deep-frying. Hey, it was her birthday!

  21. I love crab dip, so I bet I’d love these!

  22. These look fantastic – and would no doubt impress the socks off people if served at a party. Love that they are so simple and easy!

  23. Devon says:

I’ve only got one thing to say: Mmmmmmm.

  24. homecookedem says:

  25. Nicole, RD says:

THOSE look awesome! I am definitely going to make those!! Are wontons in the freezer section? I guess I’ve never seen them before. I make reader recipes a lot! They’re always the best!

  26. Lisa says:

Oh Katie, I want these! They sound awesomely delicious! You are welcome to come picnic with us anytime – and you are welcome to bring your pasta salad AND your crab wontons! :)

    • Katie says:

Haha I’m glad you enjoy picnicing with me because I’m planning on sticking around for a looooooooong time. Forever, perhaps? ;)

  27. Holly says:

Oh my gosh….that sounds AMAZING. I’m so intimidated by wontons, though! I feel like mine would look…well, not like yours. :-) But I love the crab and the cream cheese combo!

I have tried quite a few recipes from fellow bloggers. They know their stuff! I use All Recipes a lot, too, but it’s fun to try things that people you “know” have tried, too. :-)

  28. Lisa says:

YUP! I make them all the time, but not these healthy ones (they look good baked). Every potluck I go to has the greasy asian fried kind. Super yum, but super unhealthy :)

  29. Holy moly those look delicious! I’m going to try them. I have an appetizer I make with wontons that I’ve been meaning to make a little more healthy, I’ll send it to you when I do!

  30. Robyn says:

Wow that looks good, and fairly easy! I’ve definitely gotten recipes from other blogs and made them myself. I find if someone else like me can do it, then I probably can too.

  31. Yummy, wantons sound so good right now! I wonder what kind of vegetarian options could go into one.

I’ve never posted an open call for recipes, but I’m always open to recipes from my readers, and I certainly pull from other blogs as well!

  32. Cara says:

I love wonton wrappers, they are so versatile! I’ve used them with all kinds of filling for party appetizers. But I must say this potsticker recipe is one of our favorites, if you’re looking for something else to try! http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=1714610

  33. Awesome recipe! And I tell my hubby all the time that he has to thank my blog and blog reading a lot! So many of our meals are inspired by blogs. And I’m sure we’ll thank you when I make these wontons!

  36. Yum Yucky says:

dollop is such a cool word. gimme gimme wonton. really really really gimme.

  37. Victoria says:

So, where exactly do you find wonton wrappers? I searched high and low at my local Giant yesterday to make these things and I got very frustrated when I couldn’t find them. I need a Wegman’s or a TJ!!

    /:

    • Katie says:

I found them in the refridgerated produce section by the tofu…I was at Wegman’s, though. :( If they didn’t need to be refridgerated I would send you some!

  38. Jen says:

You’re welcome!!!! I feel so famous now :)

  39. Hayley says:

    Oh my…oh my…salivating…I don’t even know what else to say. Wow… !!! :)
