I Should Be Running…

By Katie, February 6, 2010 9:01 am

At this very moment, I should be completing my goal of running in my first 5-mile road race.

Instead, I am trapped indoors by “paralyzing snow.”

(Can you see Dave’s car? Yeah, me neither.)

That’s what I get for signing up for a race in February, I suppose. :-?

In all honesty, when I heard the blizzard predictions for this weekend, I was extremely bummed out. :-( Even though I’ve only been training for six weeks, I feel like I’ve worked really really hard to get to a place where I could complete the 5-miler strongly and solidly. I’ve been so excited to reach this goal, to see all of my hard work and dedication in action. The fact that instead of giving my all at the finish line, I’m currently in my pajamas, stranded inside by a mass blanket of white, is a bit depressing.

The race has been rescheduled for next Saturday; however, Dave and I have already made plans to go out of town that weekend for Valentine’s Day. ♥

So no 5-miler for Katie.

HOWEVER, I am trying to remind myself that – race or no race – I have still made an important accomplishment. My fitness level has sky-rocketed in these last six weeks. My muscles, my heart, my lungs – I can feel that they’re stronger and more efficient. I’ve proven to myself that I have the dedication necessary to get my butt out the door, even when it’d be so much easier to stay inside (those freezing cold, windy days were a killer!). Deep down I know that my hard work has not been in vain.

And, if nothing else, missing out on this 5-mile race has made me even more determined to stick with my running routine, to keep challenging my body and my mind in new ways. In fact, I’ve already got my eye on an even more ambitious goal…stay tuned for more on that one. ;-)

Have you ever worked really hard to reach a goal, only to have it spoiled by the weather or some other uncontrollable force? Were you disappointed?

Wow that is A LOT of snow!!! Stay warm and safe. I’m sorry your run got snowed out and that you won’t be in town for the makeup day. :( That is a bummer…but there will be other races!

Heading out in an attempt to shovel down and see some pavement on the sidewalk and driveway. If I’m not back in 30 minutes, call the rescue squad!

  3. Elina says:

Oh no! You should just make up your own little race once the snow melts. Maybe your husband can even time you so it’s “legit.” ;) Stay warm!!!

Yikes! I think this is why I could never live in the East Coast. But don’t worry, there will be other races. And the beauty of running is that it really is about the process as well as the goal. All the training you’ve done is a huge accomplishment in it of itself!

Stay warm and enjoy the rest of the day :)
